These natural springs are tucked away from civilization deep into the remote areas of Boma Ngombe. The ride from Moshi or Arusha is smooth, on a well tarmaced road up until the junction to the hotsprings just past the Bus Stand in Boma Ng’ombe. There is a swing dangling on one side of the pool for swinging and diving into the water. It is very basic, just a strong rope and a stick tied on the end.

Day tour to Chemka/Kikuletwa Hotsprings

Maji Moto, also known as Kikuletwa Hotsprings, is a paradise in the Tanzanian savannah that provides breathtaking vistas, crystal-clear water, and lush flora. Chemka Hot Springs is the perfect spot to visit after a Kilimanjaro walk or a safari experience, and it’s only a 2-hour drive from Moshi (Tanzania), the region’s primary climbing center.

The Hotspring Near Moshi and Arusha

The water that bubbles in subterranean caverns gives Kikuletwa Hotsprings their name. It’s roughly a 45-minute journey from Moshi to Arusha town. This location, which is surrounded by fig trees, is a hidden gem in the middle of a semi-arid terrain.

Chemka oasis is a one-of-a-kind phenomenon: it is the only place in Tanzania (and most likely all of East Africa) where groundwater actively interacts with geothermal sources, forming a series of small lakes with warm, never-stagnating water that rivals the best Dominican or Maldivian resorts in terms of purity.

Important tips before visiting Chemka Hotspring at Maji Moto

Since there are no established changing rooms, consider wearing your swimming costume underneath your normal clothes. The doctor fish can be a shock at first but you get used to them

Here are some travel tips for visiting hot springs with features like a rope swing and unique fish pedicures:

Before You Go:

  • Swimwear: Make sure to wear appropriate swimwear. If you’re planning to use the rope swing or dive, opt for something secure.
  • Footwear: Bring water shoes or sandals that can get wet for easier navigation around the hot springs.
  • Sun Protection: Apply waterproof sunscreen because you’ll be exposed to the sun for an extended period. Don’t forget a hat if possible.

At the Hot Springs:

  • Rope Swing:
    • Safety First: Before attempting any moves like backflips, watch others or ask for guidance from the guardians.
    • Try Simple Moves First: If you’re not confident with complex moves, start with basic swings or simple dives to gauge your comfort level.
    • Know Your Limits: If you feel unsure, there’s no shame in sticking to simpler jumps or just watching others.
  • Swimming:
    • Use of Rubber Rings: If you’re not a strong swimmer or need a break, rent a rubber ring. It’s affordable and allows for relaxation without risk.
    • Stay Hydrated: The hot water can dehydrate you faster, so keep water nearby.
  • Fish Pedicure Experience:
    • Stay Mobile: If you’re not a fan of the fish nibbling, keep moving. The fish are attracted to stationary feet.
    • Enjoy the Novelty: If you’re curious, stand still and experience the unique sensation. It’s completely harmless.

General Tips:

  • Respect the Guardians: They are there to ensure safety and maintain the area. Follow their instructions and consider tipping for their service if it enhances your experience.
  • Environmental Awareness: These springs are natural wonders. Do your part to keep the area clean by not littering.
  • Bring Small Bills: For renting items like rubber rings or perhaps for any other minor expenses, having small change in Tanzanian shillings will be handy.
  • Photography: While enjoying the hot springs, consider capturing the moments, but be respectful of others’ privacy and the natural environment.
  • After the Visit:
    • Rehydration: Remember to rehydrate after being in the hot water.

Early in the morning, we’ll pick you up from your Moshi hotel for the hour-long trip to the Chemka Hot Springs. Hold on tight since the journey is rough and windy. Don’t forget to take in the beautiful landscape and real Tanzanian life as you go along the road.

You are free to be yourself when we come. Spend some time along the side of the springs, admiring the clear blue waters and rich greenery of the surrounding forest. Take a leisurely swim (remember, the water is quite warm, so it won’t feel like an Olympic sprint) or float in your own world, listening to the water lapping and birds overhead.

Why not try your hand at the rope swing if you’re feeling brave? Feel free, go with the flow and feel like a kid again.

The pond may be rather deep, up to 10 meters in certain spots, yet the water is so pure that you can see all the way to the bottom. Eat your lunch under the shade of the trees or, if you’re a sun worshipper, locate your own private oasis. You’ll have lots of opportunities to see the fauna that frequents the Chemka Hot Springs.
