The best time to visit Tanzania for a safari and Zanzibar for beach relaxation depends on your personal preferences, desired activities, and tolerance for crowds. Consider these factors and consult with a travel expert to plan your trip accordingly.
It’s important to note that Tanzania’s national parks and game reserves can be visited year-round. The wet season, from November to May, offers its own advantages, such as lush green landscapes, fewer tourists, and the opportunity to see newborn animals. Wildlife viewing can still be rewarding during this time, although some areas may become inaccessible due to heavy rainfall.
The peak tourist season for safaris in Tanzania is during the dry season, which generally runs from late June to October. This period offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities as animals gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot wildlife. Additionally, the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti usually occurs from June to July, providing a remarkable spectacle.
Another favorable time to visit Tanzania for safaris is during the short dry season from January to February. This period offers good weather, fewer crowds, and the chance to witness the wildebeest calving in southern Serengeti.
Zanzibar’s weather is generally pleasant and tropical year-round, making it a popular destination for beach and relaxation. The best time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry season, which occurs from June to October. During this period, you can expect sunny days, little rainfall, and comfortable temperatures for enjoying the stunning beaches and engaging in water activities like snorkelling and diving.
The months of July and August, as well as December and January, are peak tourist seasons in Zanzibar, so it’s advisable to book accommodations and activities in advance.
While the dry season is considered the best time to visit, Zanzibar can be enjoyed throughout the year. The wet season, from November to May, experiences brief showers or thunderstorms, typically in the afternoons. This period offers lower hotel rates, fewer crowds, and a lush, green landscape.
