Rhino View Point Altitude: 3,800 m Above Sea Level
The Rhino Point marks a significant juncture on the third day of the Mt. Meru climb, typically undertaken during the summit day to reach the crater rim. Situated above the treeline, this point signifies the transition to the remaining stretch of the mountain’s crater rim, following the previous eruption that altered its landscape. Beyond Rhino Point, the trail leads along a ridge adorned with volcanic ash, scree, and rocks, offering a challenging yet rewarding ascent.
On clear days, hikers are treated to breathtaking vistas encompassing Socialist Peak, Little Meru, Kilimanjaro, and the inner volcanic cone. To reach Rhino Point, hikers usually commence their ascent around 2 am, aiming for a sunrise summit experience. The initial leg of the journey involves a steep climb to Rhino Point at an elevation of 3,800 meters (12,631 feet), followed by a traverse along a narrow ridge leading to the summit.
After conquering Socialist Peak, hikers retrace their steps back to Rhino Point, navigating the narrow ridge with the awe-inspiring backdrop of the crater’s outer wall and inner cliffs. This segment of the hike is renowned for its dramatic and exhilarating ambience, offering unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape. However, it’s worth noting that the ridge between the summit and Rhino Point may pose challenges for individuals with vertigo, particularly in icy or windy conditions.
Upon reaching Rhino Point again, hikers descend to Miriakamba Hut, where they can rest and enjoy a well-deserved brunch before continuing their journey downhill. The descent to Miriakamba Hut typically takes 10-12 hours of walking, concluding what is considered the toughest day of the Mt. Meru climb.
