Lemosho Gate Elevation / Altitude: 2100 meters
Lemosho gate otherwise known as the Lemosho glades trailhead is where the Lemosho hiking trail begins as well as being one of Mount Kilimanjaro’s entry points.
For Mount Kilimanjaro climbers to get into the park, they have to register first at the Londorossi Gate, before proceeding to the Lemosho gate by car where the Kilimanjaro climb starts.
Lemosho gate registration and inspection procedures may include:-
- Passport / Visa verification
- Cross-checking itinerary for every day spent on Mount Kilimanjaro
- Cross-checking to prove if your mountain guide belongs to a registered tour company
- Make sure you have enough resources to support your climb and stay on the mountain such as porters, tents, food, and water
- Verification of Mount Kilimanjaro entry fees
Failure to which entry may be denied.
It is also at the Lemosho gate where you will find a sign illustrating the altitude, distance, and names of each campsite that will be used on the route of your choice.
The Lemosho gate also acts as the meeting point between you and the porters, giving you the chance to have final preparations if needed
Toilets and ranger’s office is located about 300m ( 984 ft.) away from the Lemosho gate from the direction where you came from.
Location of Lemosho gate
Lemosho gate is located on the northwestern side of the mountain on the foot slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. This gate is found in the rural and remote area called Lemosho, which is surrounded by plantations. The nearest campsite located about 6-7 km away is the Mti Mkubwa campsite which is the first campsite you encounter immediately after the Lemosho gate.
How to get to the Lemosho gate
To be honest the Lemosho area is constantly raining due to high altitudes and proximity to the Montane forest The roads of the Lemosho area sometimes can be pretty bad, especially during the rainy months.
You will need a reliable 4X4 vehicle/jeep to get you from Londorossi gate to Lemosho Gate as the roads are sometimes difficult to access during the rainy seasons.
Where does the Lemosho Route begin?
The Lemosho Route begins from the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate before proceeding to Lemosho gate where the actual trekking starts. Lemosho gate is also located on the Western slope of Mount Kilimanjaro.

To get to Lemosho gate you will need a 1-hour drive from Londorossi Gate. To enter Kilimanjaro National Park to use the Lemosho route, you will have to use the Londorossi Gate but the actual climbing begins at Lemosho gate.
Distance from Lemosho gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Mti Mkubwa Camp is about 6 km or 4 miles away from the Lemosho gate and it would take you about 3-4 hours trekking on foot to reach Mti Mkubwa or Big tree Camp.
