How to mentally prepare for your Mount Kilimanjaro expedition
Prepare for Kilimanjaro mentally

It is a mentality carried by a majority of people who go to Kilimanjaro to want to reach its summit. But this involves an extremely tough final ascent at high altitude. With the room available in the article, I will not focus on the real physical effects of altitude but rather, concerns about such effects. The summit night’s challenge and the final push are typically the main obstacles to reaching that peak. They are thought by many to be the toughest part of the climb. In addition to this, every climber on her way up that final ascent must conquer the thoughts in her head. Following this final, gruelling climb from the Barafu camp or Kibo Hut, you will spend the rest of the evening attempting to sleep in an A-frame hut or a tent at high camp before starting your summit night at midnight. Right from the start of your summit bid, the cold mountain air nips at your fingers, making even a simple task such as fidgeting with the strap on your backpack almost unbearable. At your feet, the soil can be soft and slippery, with a wrong step or slip potentially causing you to tumble off the path and down into the unknown.

Anyone climbing Mount Kilimanjaro will have an idea of the physical challenges awaiting them on the mountain. Days of hiking for up to 7 to 9 hours or more with only the air to breathe. Achieving the level of physical readiness necessary to conquer Kilimanjaro’s trekking challenge will be tough in itself and is something I have discussed at length in a previous post on how to physically prepare for your Mount Kilimanjaro expedition. However, the mental challenges associated with climbing a 5,895-meter-high mountain cannot be underestimated. Indeed, for many, it is the mental challenge – rather than the physical one – that defines their time up the mountain.

1. Developing a positive mindset

A change in attitude is what we are really hoping for because while a curry or a few Bovril’s might be a temporary pick-me-up, by far the most effective way to develop positivity is to change your attitudes and beliefs. A positive mental attitude is not something one can enjoy momentarily and then move on. It is a mindset, an attitude, always with you, supporting and sustaining you at the highest points of your life and certainly at the absolute worst. As you climb Kilimanjaro with your positivity as ammunition, your attitudes and beliefs become stronger and far easier to employ. What we make of our lives is a direct result of the decisions we made along the way and our attitudes towards the physical and mental challenges we face.

Nothing takes the place of training, exercise, and hard work to ensure a successful summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, have you ever noticed how much more you have achieved on the days when you were feeling really positive? This is no coincidence. There is ample evidence to show that positivity and success are closely linked and difficult to separate. It is no surprise then that developing a positive attitude is something that Kilimanjaro climbers are increasingly being encouraged to do during their preparations to climb. Many people now heed the good advice to develop a positive mental attitude (PMA) in order to boost the likelihood of success. Have you ever wondered, however, why we don’t talk about the negative mental attitude and how this will almost certainly result in failure?

2. Mental preparation exercises

Goal-setting: The last, and perhaps most important, mental preparation exercise you can start before you go to Kilimanjaro is goal setting. This aspect of mental preparation is the art of setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound objectives. These need to be appropriate to the mountain and your personal abilities. It is easiest to direct your energy and motivation towards achieving key goals. This makes the task of climbing altitude more approachable, possibly more exciting, and potentially much less daunting.

Visualization: Visualization is the mental preparation of images that can be used to help motivate your behavior and reinforce the emotions related to your travel objectives. It is a technique that you can use to mentally picture yourself being successful. Visualization is easy to do and as part of your mental preparation for Kilimanjaro, you can rehearse your successful expedition while it is still in the planning stages. No one can see the future, but by rehearsing your success in your mind’s eye your attitudes, self-conviction, and belief in yourself will be reinforced. See yourself conquering Kilimanjaro and notice what it feels like to picture yourself celebrating at the summit.

Constructive self-talk: Constructive self-talk can be powerful and it is important to tell yourself that you are strong enough to meet the challenge when you are feeling challenged. Encourage yourself as you would encourage a friend. This is so important. You wouldn’t tell a friend that they couldn’t do it, so don’t say it to yourself.

3. Set realistic expectations:

Understand that climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a highly demanding and arduous undertaking. It is crucial to approach this expedition with a pragmatic comprehension of the numerous obstacles you might face throughout your expedition. From the steep slopes to the harsh weather conditions, it is imperative to be prepared for the physical and mental challenges that await you on this unforgettable journey. The ascent to the summit of Kilimanjaro requires endurance, determination, and unwavering perseverance. As you embark on this remarkable adventure, remember that conquering this majestic mountain will be an accomplishment of a lifetime, rewarding you with indescribable views and an overwhelming sense of triumph.

4. Visualize success:

Take some time to close your eyes and vividly picture yourself triumphantly standing at the majestic summit of the awe-inspiring Kilimanjaro, surrounded by the breathtaking vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. Allow yourself to immerse in the invigorating feeling of unparalleled accomplishment and indomitable pride that will surge through you as you conquer every formidable challenge to reach the pinnacle. Through the power of visualization, transport yourself to that triumphant moment and bask in the profound sense of triumph that will ignite your confidence and kindle the fiery flames of unwavering motivation deep within your core.

5. Build mental resilience:

Climbing Kilimanjaro is an incredible adventure that demands not only physical strength but also an unwavering mental toughness and indomitable resilience. In order to conquer this daunting challenge successfully, it is essential to equip yourself with effective and proven techniques to cultivate and nourish your mindset. One highly beneficial method is practicing mindfulness, which involves bringing your attention to the present moment and fully experiencing it without judgment. By being fully present during the climb, you can savor the small victories along the way and maintain a clear sense of direction. Another invaluable technique is meditation. Taking regular moments of stillness and quiet contemplation can help you disentangle yourself from negative thoughts, fears, or doubts that may arise during the arduous trek. Through meditation, you can develop a heightened inner awareness, enabling you to stay centered and composed in the face of any challenges that come your way. In addition to mindfulness and meditation, engaging in deep breathing exercises can prove instrumental in managing stress and fostering a profound sense of calm. By focusing on your breath and inhaling deeply, you can release tension, find solace, and restore balance to your mind and body. These revitalizing moments of deep breathing can rejuvenate your spirit and provide you with the strength needed to persevere. It is crucial to understand that mental resilience is not an inherent trait, but rather a skill that can be developed and refined over time. Therefore, it is essential to engage in consistent practice and cultivate a positive mindset. Challenges and hardships will undoubtedly arise during the climb, but by nurturing mental resilience, you will be equipped with the ability to stay focused, determined, and undeterred, regardless of the adversities faced. As you embark on this awe-inspiring journey, remember that climbing Kilimanjaro is not solely a physical feat. It is a mental and emotional conquest that tests your limits and pushes you to transcend your perceived capabilities. By honing your mental toughness and resilience through techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing, you will embark on this life-changing adventure with unwavering confidence and unwavering determination.

Cultivating a flexible mindset is absolutely crucial in conquering any obstacles that may be encountered and maintaining unwavering mental strength and resilience throughout the entirety of your expedition. With careful preparation, diligent planning, and a proactive approach, you will enhance your ability to navigate through the twists and turns of your voyage. By staying open-minded and embracing change, you will not only be able to handle the unanticipated hurdles that come your way, but also transform them into valuable learning experiences that propel you forward. Remember, flexibility is not only a key ingredient for success, but also a vital tool for personal growth and self-discovery. Seeking professional guidance and support

These are some of the qualities that you should look for in picking the right adventure company to organize your mountain climb. The company should introduce you to your guide many weeks before you arrive in the country. Why? Because he or she is the leader of your expedition after all. He or she will also be your anchor and wall to lean on at desperate times and during difficult moments. It is easy for someone to say, “you will be all right” over their phones in their cozy offices thousands of miles away from the foot of Kilimanjaro while probably eating a burger during the day and a pizza during the night. When your entire body is aching with fatigue and your limbs are slowly going numb, the same person will be at home watching a documentary about Kilimanjaro on television, updated from the history of its discovery to what you are experiencing at the moment.

Most climbers going up Kilimanjaro focus on the physical and logistical aspects of their expedition. But are they ready mentally? We cannot predict what may happen or how one may feel above 4000 meters. Surely, it may be easy to be excited and nervous at the same time before going up a mountain like Kilimanjaro, which is 5895 meters to its peak above sea level. Also, the fact that adventurers have never experienced what they are about to go through makes them easily give in to listening to wrong advice from outside sources, most of whom, including some unrelated acquaintances, may have little or less knowledge about Kilimanjaro and your walking habits.
