The Olesekut peak in the Oloroka mountain range, located in the South Rift Valley approximately 50 kilometers from Nairobi, provides a reasonably simple day climb through Maasai territory that takes around 5-6 hours to accomplish. Foreigners incorrectly refer to this location as ol esakut, a Maa curse term, much to the chagrin of the local Maasai. It’s a less strenuous alternative to the Oltepesi side’s more steeper and higher ascent up Oloroka.
How to Get There
Take Langata Road to Kenya’s Bomas, then turn right onto Magadi Road, passing via Ongata Rongai, Kiserian, and Corner Baridi on your way to Kisamis. Take the Ngong circle road to the right and proceed beyond the bridge till you reach J.M Kariuki’s memorial marker, which is located near the place where his body was discovered in 1975, following his assassination under Jomo Kenyatta’s rule. Turn left and head towards Ole Sayeti till you come upon a Manyatta where you may park your car. A nominal fee is charged by local homestead owners to look after your vehicle.
