The Olesekut peak in the Oloroka mountain range, located in the South Rift Valley approximately 50 kilometers from Nairobi, provides a reasonably simple day climb through Maasai territory that takes around 5-6 hours to accomplish. Foreigners incorrectly refer to this location as ol esakut, a Maa curse term, much to the chagrin of the local Maasai. It’s a less strenuous alternative to the Oltepesi side’s more steeper and higher ascent up Oloroka.

How to Get There

Take Langata Road to Kenya’s Bomas, then turn right onto Magadi Road, passing via Ongata Rongai, Kiserian, and Corner Baridi on your way to Kisamis. Take the Ngong circle road to the right and proceed beyond the bridge till you reach J.M Kariuki’s memorial marker, which is located near the place where his body was discovered in 1975, following his assassination under Jomo Kenyatta’s rule. Turn left and head towards Ole Sayeti till you come upon a Manyatta where you may park your car. A nominal fee is charged by local homestead owners to look after your vehicle.

Guides for hiking Olesekut

Since this hill is on Maasai community territory, you’ll need a native guide to trek it. The following guides are familiar with the area’s trails and can also provide information on the flora and history of the area. If you want to plan a visit, give them a day’s notice.

The route begins in the lowlands of Ole Sayeti, skirting to the left of this little hill before cutting through another plain to reach the base of Olesekut. It then climbs into oloroka ridges, which provide breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including the distant Ngong Hills.

The route then descends to a high height and follows a ridge top with spectacular V-shaped gullies on either side and breathtaking steep rock fall. Kitalo Cave, at the top of one of these side valleys, served as a haven for Maasai Morans during their period of wild existence after circumcision. Olesekut is blissfully remote from civilization, save for a few herds of Maasai livestock grazing on the lower hill slopes, and from its peak, you have beautiful views of both the Ngong Hills and Mt Olorgesailie. From Nairobi, it’s a very pleasant day trek.
