Mount Makarot standing at 3,133 m is a volcanic cone located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Northern Tanzania. It is a prospective tourist hiking attraction, offering a one-day trip with the possibility of also seeing Mount Satiman and the Malanja depression.
Hike to the summit for a glimpse of the Ngorongoro crater, Lake Eyasia, and other sights in the area.
Because hiking rarely requires the use of roads, you may visit at any time of year. Just remember to carry rain gear if you want to visit during the rainy season, which runs from March to June each year.
Mount Makarot lies in the northern Tanzanian province of Arusha, not far from the Western crater rim of the Ngorongoro crater.
Several Maasai traditional bomas and attractions, like as the Malanja depression, are located nearby. Please read the map below for further information about its location.
The last section must be completed on foot, however, you may drive to its base from the Loduare gate or one of the nearby hotels.
Mount Makarot HikingAfter breakfast, travel along the road to Endulen to a settlement called Misigiyo, where the walk begins through a tightly packed acacia tree valley, from which you will abruptly emerge into a scrubby grassy grassland.
It takes around 2 hours to reach the mountain, which has excellent views of Lake Eyasi and Endulen once reached.
After that, you’ll walk for another half hour through some stunning high-altitude woods. Animals such as buffalo and baboons may leave signals. After that, you’ll have to struggle up another 200 meters to reach Makarot’s top. You’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view and the sensation of being on the top of the globe from there. The terrain drops away in front of you, leading to Lake Eyasi, the western wall of the Rift Valley, Lake Ndutu, Olduvai Gorge, and the Serengeti grasslands.
The Gol Mountains may be seen in the distance.
Mt. Oldeani may be seen to your left, while the western section of the Ngorongoro Crater can be seen to your right. The beauty and variety of wildflowers varies depending on the time of year. Enjoy your picnic lunch while taking in the scenery. Then you may return the way you came or descend the northern slopes of Makarot to the Serengeti plains, where you will meet up with your car on the Serengeti road. There are several walking chances in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, but we feel this is the greatest in terms of panoramic beauty. The hike takes about 5-6 hours in total.
