Mawenzi Tarn Elevation / Altitude: 4305 Above Sea Level
Mawenzi Tarn Camp got its name due to its nearness to a Tarn at Mawenzi on Kilimanjaro. Located just at the base of Mawenzi, the second-highest peak on Mount Kilimanjaro after Kibo is the Mawenzi Peak.
The Mawenzi Tarn Camp is rarely used by climbers as compared to the other accommodation campsites on Mount Kilimanjaro.
It is generally a small, intimate campsite used by climbers trekking Mt Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route but is only used for ascent.
Location of Mawenzi Tarn campsite
Mawenzi tarn camp is one of the few camps located in the proximity of a tarn at the lower side of Mawenzi peak. Owing to this strategic location near Mawenzi makes it suitable for those hikers aiming to reach and summit the Mawenzi peak. Mawenzi Tarn Camp is the second last camp encountered on the mountain for climbers using the Rongai Route.
Mawenzi Tarn Accommodation & Toilets
At the campsite, the popular type of accommodation is mostly in tent form with shared options for toilets in the form of pit latrines.
Even though the campsite is located at high altitudes, there is the availability of water at the camp. The water that comes from a tarn nearby the camp is not safe to drink but it helps with sanitation and general cleaning at the camp.
